Deep clay-loam soil, big blocks and decades-old plantings mean camellias, azaleas, magnolias and long-run hedges through Killara, Gordon, Pymble and Wahroonga, plus lawns that sit under a heavy tree canopy and struggle for light and airflow.
That canopy sets the work: shade-tolerant turf, careful mowing height, pruning to open plants back up, and a lot of leaf litter to deal with year round. We mow and edge on a regular round, keep hedges square, prune and mulch by season, and clear gutters and yard debris on the leafiest blocks. Closer to the harbour the blocks get steep, so terraced beds, retaining walls and stepped paths are common.

Will grass grow under all the trees on the North Shore?
It can, with the right approach. Shade-tolerant turf, a higher mowing height, thinning or lifting overhanging branches and regular feeding all help. Where a spot gets almost no direct sun, a shade-tolerant garden bed or mulched area is a better result than replacing failing turf every year.
Can you keep long hedges trimmed on large North Shore blocks?
Yes, it's one of our most common jobs up here. Established camellia, lilly pilly, murraya and photinia hedges hold their shape best with a light trim two or three times a year rather than one hard cut, and we take the clippings with us.
